ABOUT ICMPE-10

Introduction

The “International Conferences on Marine Pollution and Ecotoxicology (ICMPE)” was first created by Professor Rudolf Wu and held at City University of Hong Kong (CityU), Hong Kong in 1995.  Building on its marvellous success, the ICMPE Conference series was flourished and continuously held in 1995, 1998, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2019 in Hong Kong, making this ICMPE Conference series as a signature event in the international arena of marine pollution and ecotoxicology research.  Although the ICMPE-10 was supposed to be held in 2022, it was inevitably postponed due to the global COVID pandemic.  To mark the 30ᵗʰ Anniversary of the Conference series, the ICMPE-10 will be held physically at CityU during 3-6 January 2024. It will be jointly organized by the State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution and Department of Chemistry of CityU as well as the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA).

Following the long tradition and best practices, the ICMPE-10 Conference aims to provide a forum for experts all over the world to meet and discuss their frontier research, and the latest scientific and technological advancements in relation to marine pollution and ecotoxicology.  The ICMPE-10 also endeavours to advance the participants' understanding of local, regional and global marine pollution problems and jointly explore their solutions, hoping that such problems can be more effectively resolved in the future.  The ICMPE-10 Conference welcome participants from governments, business and academia.  Research students and young scientists are particularly encouraged to join us and share their research discoveries with peers and experts.

Of course, there will be memorable events for celebrating our friendships and marking the 30ᵗʰ Anniversary of the ICMPE with a lot of cheers, toasts and laughter!

We look forward to seeing you all at CityU in Hong Kong!

With very best wishes,

Scientific themes

The Conference will primarily focus on the following key areas:

  • Legacy pollution issues (e.g. organic, metal and biocides’ pollution);

  • Ocean plastic issues (i.e., marine debris management; environmental fate, ecotoxicity and ecological risk of macro-, micro- and nano-plastics);

  • Environmental fate, ecotoxicity and ecological risk of contaminants of emerging concern (e.g. perfluorinated compounds, new generations of frame retardants, endocrine disrupting chemicals, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, engineered nanomaterials);

  • Advanced ecotoxicology (including molecular toxicology, omics and adverse outcome pathways (AOPs));

  • Coastal eutrophication, hypoxia, harmful algae blooms and algal toxins;

  • Marine ecosystem responses to climate and environmental changes (e.g., global warming, ocean acidification, sea level rise) and ocean carbon neutrality;

  • Biological responses to chemical mixtures and/or multiple stressors (e.g. thermal stress, salinity stress, ocean acidification, biological invasion);

  • Innovative marine pollution monitoring and control technology;

  • Environmental policy (e.g. integrated environmental assessment and management; water and sediment quality criteria; seafood safety and mariculture);

  • Action Programmes and Projects of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, and UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030);

  • Environmental education and citizen science for marine protection.
